The area of S. C. she was likely born in was designated Salem County in 1791. She may have been an orphan & lived with Robert Lowry. When Sarah & David died suddenly (probable typhoid fever), their children were thereby orphaned & were taken care of ("looked after") by their Aunt Mary Eliza Douglass (she became Mrs. Gabriel Plowden) who, among the children themselves, referred to Eliza as "old Auntie". and "I have some teaspoons from Sarah by way of my grandmother engraved 'R.S.L'" & Mrs. C. J. Lemmon's mother told her that the old custom was to engrave initials of husband's given name, wife's given name, & husbands's surname...Robert & Sarah Lowry (R.S.L) & spoons went to eldest daughter in the couple's family & her mother said that the Lowrys had no children. It was Mrs. Lemmon's opinion that Robert Lowry's wife was a daughter of John and Ann McCrae Matthews and that the Douglass orphans were by one of Ann's sisters.

Professional genealogist, Theresa V. Hicks of Columbia, S. C., thought that Sarah was a Dunn, daughter of Sylvester Dunn, Sr., and that Sarah had first married John Douglass (via Sumter Co., estate records of Sylvester & his wife, Jannet's, will).
