Asheville – On May 19, 2009 Jack entered into his heavenly kingdom to be reunited with his beloved wife Louella, whom he had missed every day for 15 years.

Jack was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He graduated from Woodfin High School, attended Asheville Biltmore College, Cadet School at Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee. Jack proudly served his country as a Corporal in the US Army during World War II and the Korean War. Jack worked for the US Postal Service for 30 years and remained a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers in retirement. Jack was an active member and lifelong supporter of the Republican Party and a member of VFW Post 891. He worshiped his Lord at Victory Baptist Church where he was a member of the Sunshine Club and Fervent Men's Sunday School Class.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Maude Virginia Holcombe Penley and Garrett Elijah Penley; wife, Louella Mae Banks Penley; brothers, Grover, Roy, Herman, Kermit and nephew, Charles.

Left to honor his memory are daughters, Virginia (Ginny) Bullock and husband Lester and Mary Ella Cagle and husband Lee; special caregivers Judy and David Herron, Jason Honeycutt and David Penley; grandson, Ryan Bullock and wife Ami; granddaughter, Brianna Bullock; great-grandsons, Aspen Brooks Bullock and Linken Blake Bullock who lovingly called him "Papu" and always made him smile.

Jack leaves behind many friends who shared his love of country music, debated politics and shared coffee every morning at McDonalds.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Saturday at Victory Baptist Church and will be conducted by Rev. Mark R. Chase and Rev. James Lamb.

Burial will follow in Elk Mountain Cemetery with military honors conducted by Asheville High School JROTC.

Pallbearers will be David Herron, Jason Honeycutt, Joseph Bourne, David Bourne, Lee Cagle, Lester Bullock, Ryan Bullock and David Penley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Tomberlin, Charles Bradley and Jack's morning coffee drinking buddies.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 pm Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

Flowers are appreciated, however, Jack would be honored by contributions made to Victory Baptist Church in his memory.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the compassionate caregivers at Mission Hospitals' Neuro Trauma ICU, as well as Jack's church family at Victory Baptist Church who provided him with love and support for many years.
