First child of John Buchanan and second wife, Sarah Ridley Buchanan.

He was born 11 days after the "Battle of Buchanan's Station," in which his parents helped successfully defend it from Indian attack.

At that time, Buchanan's Station was part of the "Territory of the United States, South of the Ohio River" (more commonly known as the Southwest Territory), in the Mero District. It had been ceded by North Carolina to the US Federal Government when that state ratified the US Constitution in 1789.

George Buchanan is buried next to his orphaned cousin Elizabeth Ridley, who also died at a young age.
