Son of Robert Sr. and Jeanette Alert. He moved with his family to Elkhart, Indiana when he was a child. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on July 11, 1968 after graduating from Elkhart High School and took his basic training at Parris Island MCRD and infantry training at Camp Lejuene, both in North Carolina. On March 12, 1969 he arrived in Vietnam, serving as an anti-tank assaultman with the H&S Co., 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He died as a result of multiple fragments wounds from a booby trap while on a search and destroy operation, about four kilometers from An Hoy Airfield. He had attained the rank of Private First Class at the time of his death.
