Born in Ashuelot, New Hampshire, USA on 26th of June 1916. She was the fifth and youngest child of James and Ellen (Jackson) Ashton.

At age 18 she married Arthur Maynard. The couple had two sons, Arthur "Artie" and James.

In December 1948 she married Thomas Sterczala. The couple had four children together: William "Billy", Ellen Mary, Thomas Peter (Junior), and Charlotte Ann.

Gladys worked the night shift at the Stevens Linen mill. She was well-liked by people around her. She was talented in handicrafts such as crochet and embroidery. She also loved to raise plants.

She passed away in the early hours on the 26th of June 1969. She had a stroke the day before. It was her 53rd birthday.
