Richard Cale, age 102, of Menomonie, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the American Lutheran Home.
Richard was born on February 3, 1910 on a ranch near Flasher, North Dakota to George Oren and Lovy May (Brooks) Cale. Much of his early life was spent herding horses and cattle on the open range of the O C Ranch in Dakota.
Because of a drought in the west, Richard's parents moved the family from Dakota to a farm near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in December of 1918. When Richard was about 17 years of age, his brother, Harry who owned the Midway Garage located half way between Chippewa and Eau Claire hired him. There he learned the mechanics of engine repair. When his brothers at home left to find other employment Richard returned to the family farm to help his parents. By this time his parents had moved from the Chippewa Falls area farm to a farm located between Menomonie and Elk Mound. Richard, sometimes called "Dick" was still working for his parents when he met Luella Larson. Luella was employed at Winfield Kern's Lakeside Café as a cook. The couple was married on October 17th, 1934. The country was still in a "depression" and Dick and Luella rented a dairy farm on Heller Road where they farmed until 1941. Their two daughters, Carol Jean and Virginia Jean, were born during this time. In 1941, they moved to the "Halverson Dairy Farm" located on County Road BB near the Ideal School. Richard and Luella farmed side by side and together they replaced all the buildings on the farm other than the original old "milk house". In 1946, Richard decided to try working on construction as a cement finisher. His first job was finishing a cement floor in the Rusk Creamery. That was the beginning of a long career as a cement finisher. He was soon a foreman and considered one of the top "finishers" in the Eau Claire Local. He worked on many construction jobs, some of which are: the roof on St. Joe's Catholic Church, the bell tower at Christ Lutheran Church, the Alma Dam, Sanna Dairies remodeling, Chippewa High School, Holiday Inn (Eau Claire) and Stout's Steam Plant. He was employed by 40 different employers over the years including Market & Johnson and Thomas Brothers.
His third vocation began when the clock repair person at Madsen's Jewelry passed away. It happened that there were several clocks disassembled in the process of repair and Richard offered to "put them together and make them run correctly". And so he was in the "business" of clock repair for many years. He fixed clocks at home and also made house calls to service "Grandfather clocks" and other large clocks. He did clock repair until after Luella had a stroke and then he spent the next 13 years caring for her in their home.
During their lifetime Richard and Luella shared their love of farming and she continued to do the necessary farm work so he could work on construction which was his favorite career. Together they enjoyed collecting clocks and doing activities with their grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Carol (Clifford) Wendt of Menomonie and Virginia (Larry) Drier of Eau Galle, one sister-in-law, Ruth Larson, six grandchildren, Anthony Wendt, Cynthia (Dave) Kraemer, Julie Drier, Tamara (Paul) Saunders, Scott (Jacki) Drier and Bethany Drier; 10 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Luella, five brothers; Harry, Herbert, Clifford, Rudolph and Harold; three sisters; Nelly, Viola and Marjorie and one great-great-grandson, Jack Stamper.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at Christ Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastor Geoff Scott officiating. There will be visitation from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Halvorson Cemetery in Menomonie.
Note. The Halverson farm was really the farm of Jergan (John) and Aavedt Kirstine (Christine) Johnson who were both born in Norway. This was Homestead land. They donated the land to the west for a neighborhood burial ground called Highland and it is here that they are buried. They also donated the land for the Ideal School.
