Native American Leader and Anthropologist. Archie Phinney was one of the most prominent founders of the National Congress of American Indians in 1944. A member of the Nez Perce tribe in Idaho, he became the first Native American to graduate from the University of Kansas. Later he pursued graduate studies in anthropology and did original research in Siberia. He wrote the Nez Perce Texts, a collection of Nez Perce myths. He also became a field agent for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and ended his career serving the Nez Perce as superintendent of the Northern Idaho Agency. As a prominent citizen of the state of Idaho, he had a building at the University of Idaho named for him.
