Mary "Mollie" Chick was born on 28 February 1854 in Schuyler County, Illinois. She was the oldest child in the family of James Henry Chick, Jr., and Dorcas Jane "Janie" Greenwell. In 1857, her father moved their family to Palo Pinto County, Texas, where they settled on the Brazos River. Chick Bend in the Brazos is named for the Chick family. As a child, during the Civil War years, Mollie remembered her father riding off with Company G of the Frontier Regiment, Texas Cavalry, to protect the frontier settlements from marauding bands of Comanche and Kiowa.

On 23 March 1871, Mollie married Peter Eldridge Slaughter, son of George Webb Slaughter and Sarah Jane Mason, who had also settled in Palo Pinto County. In 1881, Pete Slaughter took his first herd of cattle to the White Mountains of Arizona, and they eventually settled there on the Black River. Mollie and Pete Slaughter had nine children, four of whom survived her.

In the mid-1890s, Mollie left Pete Slaughter and divorced him. On 11 July 1898, she married a man named James Owens at St. Johns, Arizona. They had no children. In the 1900 Census, Mollie was living in Springerville, with Owens and her two youngest surviving children, John Slaughter, II, and Callie Slaughter, 9. In that same 1900 Census, Pete Slaughter was recorded as "widowed," living in Springerville with his sons, Arthur, 19, Paschal, 17, and Joel, 15.

Mollie's second husband, James Owens, died about 1905. In the 1910 Census, Mollie, widowed, was the head of her household, living with Joel, John and Callie. Mollie dien in Clifton, Arizona, on 20 January 1920.
