Monarch of Spain. Descendant of the Bourbon dynasty, he is known as the usurper in that he ousted his father King Charles IV (1808) and forcing him into exile with his wife Queen Maria Luisa. He reigned twice, because immediately the first time he was ousted in turn by Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1813, following the French defeat in the battle of Leipzig, the victorious nations decreed the Bourbon restoration with Ferdinand VII as king of Spain. He was the last absolute ruler of the decadent Spanish empire.
