Pfc. Howard Johnson II of Fort Bliss, who was excited about being in Kuwait to fight Saddam Hussein,
Johnson enlisted in the Army in July 2002 after graduating from La Fleur High School in Mobile.

After basic and advanced training, he was assigned to the 507th at Fort Bliss.

His father said he last heard from his son several days before the ambush. "He was very excited when he called from Kuwait," Johnson Sr. said. "He was about as happy as I have ever heard him. He told me, 'Daddy, I've never seen anything like this ... the only thing is, they wear sheets or something like that.' I explained to him that they had a different culture over there.

"He was a good boy and a good soldier,"

"I am proud of him as a son and as a soldier and his achievements. He was the kind of person who would do whatever he could to help anyone. He loved his family, and he was kind to other people."
