Bernis Brown was one of the early Methodist preachers in Albemarle County, entering the ministry before the end of the eighteenth century. He also was a signer of the Albemarle County Declaration of Independence on 2 Apr 1779.

Bernis Brown married Henrietta Rhodes, daughter of John Rhodes and Sarah Harris. From this union were the following issues:
1. Sarah Brown, married Thomas Jones
2. Henrietta Brown, married John Ruff
3. Ann Brown, married John Dickerson
4. Judge Bernis Brown Jr., name of wife unknown, she died, leaving Bernis with 12 children. Emigrated to Saline County, MO.
5. Tyre Brown, born 13 Jun 1793, he married Sarah Nicholas at Rockingham County, VA.
6. Benjamin T. (Long Thompson) Brown, married Lucy Ann Richards who lived to the age of 90 years.
7. Elizabeth Brown
8. John R. Brown, married Candace Hall, no issues from this union.
