William E. Halstead Jr., 83, departed this earth Oct. 20, 2003.
Born in South Norfolk, William was the son of the late William E. Halstead Sr. and Mercedes Consolvo Halstead. He moved to Ocean View in 1929 and joined the Army National Guard in 1940.
Survivors include two wonderful friends, Jennifer and Jonathan Steimen of Reston, Va.; and three cousins, Mary Catherine Jackson, Marietta Trawczynski, both of Chesapeake and Louise Phelps of New York.
William joined the 29th Division of the National Guard in 1940 and traveled overseas on the HMS Queen Mary. On June 6, 1944, D-day, William made the invasion in Normandy France and landed on Omaha Beach. He retired from Naval Air Station Norfolk after 30 years of service in Building 353.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to 29th Division, Post, c/o Carl Barber, 5367 Sir Barton Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Graveside internment will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery with military honors. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
