As a descendant of the Lesner family of Norfolk and the King family of Portsmouth, I am particularly interested in our Virginian family plots. Most all of my ancestors are buried at Elmwood, Forest Lawn, and Riverside Memorial Park in Norfolk, as well as Portlock Cemetery (part of Oak Grove Cemetery) in Portsmouth.As a descendant of the Swindell and Sawyer families of Hyde County, I am also interested in our North Carolinian family plots. These ancestors are buried in various cemeteries along the Mid-Atlantic.Having completed memorial management of direct ancestors, I am now working on my in-laws. This includes the Brushwood family of Boston, MA and the Williams and Crawford families of Shelby, NC.I am so indebted to the Find-A-Grave volunteers who helped me claim and update my family memorials that I decided to become a volunteer myself.Interesting tidbit for locals about the Lesner (a.k.a. Lynnhaven) Bridge:My great grandfather (my mother's grandfather), John Lesner, became Sheriff of Norfolk in 1878, and his son, my great uncle (my mother's uncle), John A. Lesner, was a Virginia state senator who served in the upper house of the General Assembly from 1908 to 1938. In 1958, the original 1928 draw bridge crossing over the Lynnhaven Inlet on Shore Drive was replaced by the Lesner Bridge, which was named by the General Assembly for his service on the State Highway Commission. In 1967, that bridge became the eastbound lane of the current parallel dual span.My grandmother (my mother's mother), Amy Lesner King, was the first licensed woman driver in Norfolk and possibly Virginia.
