From the Greenfield Vedette, Nov 26, 1914 -
Uncle Dan had about 110 living descendants at the time of his death.
Up to his 98th birthday Uncle Dan took an occasional drink of whiskey, but on that day he announced to his friends assembled at the annual party, that he thought it was about time to "swear off" and thereafter was a total abstainer.
During his youth while on his way to Bowling Green, KY riding on a load of tobacco he tried a little of it that one time. The experience resulted so unpleasantly that he ever afterwards thought of it as a narrow escape from death; and to his final day expressed himself as unable to understand why anyone should use it.
