Mrs. Sarah Goodwin died February 13, 1922 at St. Joseph's Hospital where she has been for the past year. Death was caused from infirmities of old age. Three years ago Mrs. Goodwin had the misfortune to fall and fracture her hip from the effects of which she never recovered.
Mrs. Goodwin was born in Dublin, Ireland of English parentage on April 3, 1830 and was nearly ninety-two years of age at the time of her death.
At an early age her parents came to America and settled in Montreal, Canada, where she spent her girlhood days. Her maiden name was Sarah Smith. She was united in marriage to John Goodwin at St. Andrews' Episcopal church at Montreal on April 11, 1848, both bride and groom having been baptized in the church when infants. After residing for several years in Canada they moved to St. Paul in 1853 and 1854 they went to Judson where Mr. Goodwin laid out and named the village of Judson. They came to Mankato about forty years ago and have resided here since that time, with the exception of ten years that were spent in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Mr. Goodwin died in 1898.
Mrs. Goodwin was a devout member of the First Baptist church of this city. She was the mother of fourteen children six of whom survive her. They are: Mrs. R. F. Hugunin of Portland, Ore., William H. Goodwin of Lawler, Minn., Mrs. C. G. Hopperstead of Spokane, Wash., Charles S. Goodwin of Portland, Ore., Mrs. F. L. Austin and Miss Lulu Goodwin of Mankato, Minn.; the two latter being at her bedside when she passed away. She is also survived by one sister, Rev. Sister Smith, Hotel Dieu, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Mrs. Goodwin was an exemplary mother, a devout Christian and her life was centered in the home surroundings.
Funeral services will be held from Landkamer's undertaking parlors Wednesday, February 15 at two o'clock. Rev. R. A. Jensen of the Baptist church will officiate. Interment will be in the Glenwood cemetery.
