Lawrence Murphy, age 83, of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 28, 2011 surrounded by his family. Larry was born on May 6, 1928 in Covington, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Homer E. and Catherine W. Murphy.


Larry spent most of his adult life as a resident of the Philadelphia area, and spent the last thirty six years of his life in Elkton. He was a member of the American Legion Post 15. He enjoyed bowling with his league and playing cards.


He was predeceased by Isabella 'Liz' Murphy, his wife of 55 years; a daughter, Maryanne; and his brother, Gerald E. Murphy.


Larry is survived by five children, Michael D. Murphy and his wife, Charlene of Glenolden, PA, Patricia A. Smythe and her husband, Patrick of Elkton, MD, Lori J. Murphy of Elkton, MD, Robert L. Murphy and his wife, Susan of Elkton, MD and Kathleen E. Catlett and her husband, Joseph of Elkton, MD; his sister in law, Margaret E. Carey of Lima, PA; and long-time friend, Bob Flowers.


'Poppy' was affectionately known by his 13 surviving grandchildren, Brian Murphy, Lisa Krautheim of PA, Colleen Smythe of DE, April Hopkins, Marianne Ewing, Shawn Smythe, Heather George, Joseph B. Catlett, Erin Murphy, Lauren Murphy, all of Elkton, MD, Christopher Dorrin of North East, MD, Frank Dorrin III of Waldorf, MD and Michael Dorrin of VA; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews.


Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 2, 2011 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A. (formerly Gee Funeral Home), 259 East Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921, where friends and family may call one hour prior.


Interment will be at Elkton Cemetery, Elkton, MD.


Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 194 Honor Guard or the Kidney Foundation, c/o the funeral home.
