She was born in Atlanta, Ga. on Nov. 21, 1965 and was the daughter of Buddy and Nadine Crist of Fairlawn, Pulaski County.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Walter Smith, and Ralph and Goldie Crist.
She was a graduate of Pulaski County High School, Class of 1983, and attended Hollins College where she graduated Cum Laude in 1986 and earned her M.A. degree in 1987.
She earned her M.F.A. degree in creative writing at the University of Virginia in 1990. She was a fiction writer and music critic for many publications, including Option, The Village Voice, Madamoiselle, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian.
She also contributed to the SPIN Alternative Record Guide.
She was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Charlottesville, and was a Rock DJ on Charlottesville's WTJU FM with her show, "Ground Rule Double Dutch."
Surviving are: her husband, Robert Sheffield of Charlottesville; her parents, Buddy and Nadine Crist of Fairlawn; one sister, Drema Crist; a grandmother, Freda Smith of Fairlawn; and uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 15 at 12 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Chapel with Father Jin Grealish; and the Rev. Danny Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Burial Park, Fairlawn. Visiting will be Wednesday evening from the Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
