Rosco Staton Obituary

Title: City Resident Since 1886 Dies
By Katricia Cochran

A pioneer Wichitan once called the city's "walking history book," 82 – year – old Rosco Staton died Monday morning in a Wichita Falls hospital.

Staton was born August 5, 1883, in Ellis County, Texas, and came here as a three – year – old child with his parents. His father, John T. Staton was a farmer.

On December 13, 1905, Staton married Miss Bertie Snowden of Jacksboro at Elk City, Okla. They observed their 60th wedding anniversary last December.

Although the couple spent the first few years of their marriage in other states – including Colorado where their first home was a 14-by-8-foot half dugout where their first child learned to walk – before returning here in 1911, Staton always claimed Wichita Falls as home.

Until he was 32 years old, Staton farmed or worked in the oil fields. For the past 50 years he has been involved in real estate and was a charter member of the Wichita Falls Real Estate Board organized in 1923. He served as its president three years.

He was a state director of the Texas Real Estate association for two years and also served the two years as a member of the taxation committee of the Texas State Association of Real Estate Boards.
Staton was a member of Knights of Pythias Lodge, and Modern Woodman Lodge and served as member of the city and school equalization boards for 18 non-consecutive years.

Since 1919, he and Mrs. Staton have lived at 1600 12th.

Fond of recalling the early days of Wichita Falls, Staton would relate with pleasure the period of the 1880's when herds of antelope roamed near the city and how the Comanche Indians came into town to trade. A friend of Allen H Parmer, Staton became acquainted with Frank James – one of the pair of famed outlaws – when he visited the Parmer's.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Herman Staton, Baltimore, Md.; Anthony N. Staton Dallas: and R. Merrill Staton, San Antonio; a brother William P. Staton Wichita Falls; two grandchildren and two great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday in Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home chapel, with Dr. Howard Hollowell, pastor of First Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
