Actor. Born Charles Everest Sinsabaugh in Danby, New York, he adopted a stage name and debuted as a film actor in 1933's ‘Island of Lost Souls.' His most notable role was probably that of King Kala in 1936's ‘Flash Gordon.' He quickly solidified a niche as a heavily made up extra, playing hunchbacks, werewolves, thugs, and other menacing figures and has been referred to as a second-string Lon Chaney, Jr. He appeared in such films as ‘Alias Boston Blackie' in 1942; ‘Destination Tokyo' in 1943, 1948's ‘The Paleface;' and ‘My Favorite Spy' in 1951. York died of a self-inflicted gunshot in 1952, but unusually his career continued. Columbia Pictures, inserted stock footage of him in many shorts and westerns for several more years.
