Clockmaker. Jerome's ideas and business sense produced a series of affordable clocks. For the first time a clock was with in the reach of every american household and Jeromes business prospered. He manufactured more clocks per year than any other American clock maker.

Jerome once exported to England a shipload of clocks, hundreds at one time, all priced at 4$ each. Believing the load to be greatly underpriced, the British confiscated the entire lot. The rule in play was the load must be paid for to be confiscated in such a way and British customs sent Jerome a check for his asking price. Jerome was extactic! He sent a second load which the British promptly seized, again paying him for the lot. Shipment #3 arrives in England and this time, British customs realize, this American must be serious and they let the load go through, for sale to British dealers at Jeromes established asking price. Talk about good fortune!
Later on after many prosperous years Jerome purchased an entire clock company in default from P. T. Barnum. This company proved unworkable and in the end broke Jerome. Ruined, he tryed politics and was elected Mayor of New Haven, Conn. He died penniless, in 1868.
