Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Knake was born on September 23, 1801 in Hohnhorst, Schaumburg, Germany. He was married to Engel Maria Engelking at St. Martin Church of Hohnhorst on January 14, 1830. She died in 1833.

John Henry emigrated to the United States leaving Rotterdam, Netherlands and arriving in New York City on September 21, 1835 on the ship, Neva. With him on the ship were the Wamelink family from Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands.

John Henry had learned the trade of carpentry and, specifically, the art of making pianos. He and the Wamelink family, who were also musically inclined travelled to Chillicothe, Ohio.

John Henry married Wilhelmina Bernardina Wamelink on June 5, 1839 in Chillicothe. They had two children, Herman and Henry. Wilhelmina died within the year of her youngest son's birth on August 11, 1841. She is buried in Chillicothe. John Henry married Mary Hirt on January 12, 1842 in Fairfield County, OH. Mary and John had three children, Mary Anne, John Henry, and Joseph. John died on August 25, 1855 within five months following the death of his youngest son, Joseph. John Henry is buried somewhere in Chillicothe. The cemetery was moved and there is no record where the grave site presently exists as is true for his second wife, Wilhelmina. Mary Hirt Knake and her son and daughter moved to Cleveland, Ohio where the Wamelink family resided. Mary died on October 18, 1913 in Cleveland, Oh and is buried at St. John's RC Cemetery with her daughter, Mary Anne, who died on May 23, 1935. John Henry, the son of Henry and Mary, died in Cleveland, Ohio of epilepsy and is also buried in St. John?s RC Cemetery. He died on February 5, 1879. He had worked as a lithographer in Pittsburgh for a number of years - most likely for his brother, Herman.
