Herman Theodore Knake was born on August 12, 1839 in Chillicothe, Ohio. His parents were John Henry Knake and Wilhelmina Bernardina Wamelink. Herman moved to Pittsburgh, PA. and became a music dealer of pianos and organs. He had a store at 12 Sixth St. Pittsburgh. He also was an organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh from about 1880 until his death in 1890. He was also pianist for the Pittsburgh Quintette Club, a well known music group in the city. His flourishing music store, Barr, Knake & Buettler was the successor to Wamelink & Barr when his uncle, John Theodore Wamelink, left Pittsburgh to become organist for St. John's Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio. Herman and John T. Wamelink both were involved in composing music pre, during, and following the Civil War. They wrote and published many pieces of music honoring the returning Union soldiers. Herman also wrote and published music in 1881 for the Funeral March of President James A. Garfield. Herman travelled to Cleveland, Ohio on occasions where his extended family - the Wamelink's lived. In addition, Herman's step-mother, Mary Hirt Knake, and half-sister, Maryanne, also lived in Cleveland. Herman's father had died in Chillicothe in 1854 and his mother, Wilhelmina, died in 1841 just two years following Herman's birth. John Henry had re-married Mary Hirt a few years following the death of Wilhelmina. Mary came to Cleveland in the1860's and died in 1913.
