Dublin Brigade IRA volunteer Bernard Curtis was killed in a premature landmine explosion on the Naas Road, Inchicore. The intended target was a two-lorry convoy of Free State troops from Baldonnel that arrived on the scene about ten minutes later. The attack was intended to be carried out in retaliation for the execution of fellow volunteers in Kilmainham Jail on November 17 1922. Twenty-year-old Bernard Curtis, who was a train engine cleaner at the running sheds in Inchicore, lived at 5 Canal Cottages, Bluebell. The flat complex in Bluebell facing the site where he died is named in his honour.

The 1911 Irish Census shows 9-year-old Bernard living with his parents, Bernard (46) and Margaret (47) Curtis, and siblings John (12), Essey (7), Michael (5), and Margaret (1) in Bluebell Townland of Drimnagh Parish in County Dublin. There were three siblings previously deceased.
