Charles A. Harper was born September 13, 1853, at Newburbh, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In 1880, he came to Battle Creek, Michigan. From 1881 until 1888 he worked as a clerk for the Wright and Ketchum Lumbering Company at the headquaters camp in Ketchamville, near Hope, MI. On June 27, 1888, he married Miss Ida May Swanton and opened a general store in Hope, which he operated until 1891, when he moved to Edenville. There he bought a general store which he ran until the time of his death on Dec. 30, 1944. Long active in community and church affairs, he watched the transition of the Saginaw Valley grow from a lumbering area to an agricultural and resort center. He was a lifelong member of the Edenville Methodist Church and did much to aid the growth of this church.
