Consort Monarch of Hungary. Born into a German aristocratic family, she was the daughter of Earl Berthod IV and sister of Agnes Queen of France. She became Queen (1205) by marrying Crown Prince Andrew and is remembered for being the mother of St. Elizabeth of Thuringia. Gertrude von Andechs-Meran is also an object of literary and musical cult because of her untimely and violent death in 1213 at the hands of some Magyar aristocrats who believed her guilty of siding with the Germans at the expense of Hungary. To this tragic event are dedicated a drama and a lyric opera much loved by the Hungarians.
