Mario Mendes, 89, St. Augustine, died Sept. 5, 2011, at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Gloucester, Mass., and had resided here since 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. After serving in the Army he worked for the New England Telephone Company, retiring as a manager after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #166, the American Legion, the V.F.W., and Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Monday Sept. 12, 2011, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Interment at Jacksonville National Cemetery will be private. A visitation will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Rose Mendes, St. Augustine; two daughters, Dolores M. Darley (Robert), Phoenix, N.Y., Rosemary A. Presser, San Diego, Calif.; three granddaughters, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
