She later met and married James Brown.
In 1951 Mary moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Mary spent her life working in private homes, restaurants, and hospitals. She was a very independent and private person.
Mary worshipped with St. Luke Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Winbush and Galilee under Rev. Pike. She was a wonderful and considerate woman and was loved by many people. For some unknown reason Mary gave herself the middle name of "Tijuana". She was proud of that name and wanted the world to know it. She wanted you to greet and recognize her as Mary Tijuana Brown or Mary T. Brown. She was affectionately known as "Lil" Mary by her Tulsa Transit Bus Rider Associates. Mary had no children, but was very close to her sister Martha and her five daughters, whom she loved as her own. At the age of 79 her joy and efforts began to fail and she became ill.
Peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2006 she closed her eyes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dolph and Alice, sister Virginia Davenport, and her brothers John, Thomas and Isaiah Jefferson. Those that will forever remember her with a loving heart and mourn her passing: Her brothers; James (Susie) Jefferson of Memphis, TN, and Joseph Jefferson of Springfield MO. Her sisters: Martha Smart of Tulsa, OK and Alice Jefferson of Springhelaf MO. She will also be greatly missed by her nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
