CHARLOTTE - William "Bill" Chillcott, 82, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at his home with his family by his side.

Even though he had been fighting cancer, the way he chose to live his last year of his life with such dignity and grace was just remarkable. He loved his God, his family, his church family and his many friends.

He never let his cancer keep him from living his life to the fullest. He was an inspiration to all of us, showing us how to stand up to adversity.

Bill was born May 21, 1929, in Climax, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Zelda Chillcott. He was preceded in death by brothers Clarence, James P Chillcott, Gerald A Chillcott, Calvin, Thomas and Melvin; and sister Florence.

He was a veteran and served nine years in the U.S. Army. He served eight years in the 82nd Airborne Division as a senior paratrooper.

After his service in the military, he enjoyed opening and operating his own furniture and appliance stores in Fayetteville, Spring Lake and Clarksville, Tenn. He also owned and operated a car lot and pawn shop in Spring Lake.

After he sold and closed these businesses, he worked for the Whirpool Corp. from 1970 to 1990, and then retired again.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Adcox Chillcott; son Barry and wife Becky of Lowell; daughter Beverly (Mike) Weaver of Kansas City, Kan.; granddaughter Barbara Hall (Sam) of Missoula, Mont.; granddaughter Brenda Helms (Chris) of Gastonia; and grandson William of Lowell. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Kate Lelia Hall and Anna Beth Helms; and nieces, Sandi Mineweaser, and Shelby Nieswanger, both of Pennsylvania.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, 1601 Toddville Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Rick Schubert officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.

Bill was a longtime member of Pine Island Country Club and enjoyed playing golf with his friends. He enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie of his playing partners. He especially enjoyed playing with the Omega Seniors Group.

He will be missed by all the lives he touched, and his memory will live on forever in our hearts.

The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Alan Thalinger and his nurse Corrine, and his hospice nurse Amy Cassano and social worker Mark Byrd for their compassionate and dedicated care during his final days.
