Humanitarian Dies; Final Rites Today – Mrs. van der Sluys Founded Home Here For Elderly Negroes

Funeral services for Mrs. Marinus van der Sluys, 88, a leading Shreveport humanitarian, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. van der Sluys, who resided at 2432 Fairfield Ave., died at 9:40 p.m. Friday in P&S Hospital after a long illness.

She was known throughout the city for her charitable work and on numerous occasions gave direct assistance to destitute persons.

A native of Holland, she came to Shreveport in the early 1900s. Friend said she had practiced medicine in New York City before coming here.

Mrs. van der Sluys was the founder of the Amanda Clark Memorial Home for elderly Negroes. It was established 40 years ago.

"No one in Shreveport has done any more for people in need," a friend said. "She gave her personal attention and money."

Her husband died in 1944.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Dr. J. Lawrence Plumley, rector of the church, will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery under direction of Osborn Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be P. C. Butler, J. W. Melton, W. B. Ogilvie, Dr. W. C. Wilkins Jr., E. G. Morehead and W. D. Keith.
