Nita was born Weltha Onita Tennant to James Ezra ("Jim") and Mary Franklin ("Mamie") Thigpen Tennant in the Paxville/Home Branch area of Clarendon County, SC, on Oct. 5, 1903. She was the eldest of 7 daughters, including Ethel May, Milva Priscila, Ellen (changed later to "Helen"), Placida ("Plat"), Lucille ("Lucy"), and Susan (who died during her first year). She also had one brother, Franklin ("Frank"). Her grandparents were Franklin Witherspoon ("Frank") and Eleanora ("Ellen") Baker Thigpen, and Thompson ("Green") and Mary Amanda ("Mandy") Bryant Tennant.
She was married to John Ira "Johnnie" Hudson and had 6 children - James ("Clayton"), Carl Eugene ("Gene"), John Leroy, Mary Louise, Ruth Annette, and Charles Frankliln ("Smokey"). She was called "Gammie" or "Granny" by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
An annual family reunion dinner is still given in her honor every year around Oct. 5, since that was her birthday. Many aunts, uncles, and cousins attend the Hudson Family Reunion Dinner that has been held in Cades, Hebron County, SC, for many years. Previous family reunions had been held in Woodmen of the World buildings, Lynches River State Park, McLeod Park, and Timrod Park, all between the Florence and Kingstree areas of South Carolina. It has been going strong since sometime in the 1970s, or maybe even earlier.
NOTE: Her headstone has her name spelled Oneta, when it should read Onita.
