Ann Allen Smith and her first husband, Amos Smith were living in Woodford County, Illinois when Amos Smith died in 1855 leaving Ann with four small children, Elizabeth Ann, Henry William, Elijah and Mary Etta Smith. Shortly after Amos Smith died Ann married Jacob Rayles. Jacob was a widower with two boys. They merged their family of six children, and soon had two daughters, Victoria and Malinda.
The Rayles family moved from Illinois to Nebraska where both Ann and later Jacob died.
