The son of Samuel & Elizabeth A. (Line) Harris, in 1860 he was a blacksmith living in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, having learned the trade from his father. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Shippensburg August 4, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 10 as a private with Co. D, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862, he was admitted to Germantown U.S. Hospital in Philadelphia. Upon leaving the hospital, he was detached to duty in Gen. Darrius Couch's headquarters as a blacksmith to date December 10, 1862, but returned to the regiment and promoted to first corporal January 1, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.

He married Laura Belle Hollar and fathered Samuel (b. ?) and Carrie A. (b. @1871). Laura died in 1874, and he married Sallie A. Dittenhaffer or Dieffendorfer January 11, 1880, in Allentown, Lehigh County, fathering Roy D. (b. 08/??/81) and Samuel J. (b. 09/28/96). He lost his right eye in a blacksmithing accident. Cause of death is listed as "mitral disease of the heart with dilatation and fatty degeneration."
