BIOGRAPHY by Patrick Mahowald: :

Susanna Hoeltgen was the daughter of Jacques (Jacob) Hoeltgen and Madelaine (Magdalena) Michels. She was born in Luxembourg.

In 1826, Susanna married Nicolas Mahowald (7 May 1800 - 19 Oct 1853), and they lived in Simmern/Septfontaines, Luxembourg.

Their eldest son John V, emmigrated to the United States in 1852.
And her husband Nicholas died Oct 19, 1853, in Luxembourg.

Sons Mathias and Jacob soon emmigrated and arrived in New York on 23 Apr 1854. They joined their brother John V in New Market, Minnesota. (Note: Their cousin, John Mahowald also sailed with them in 1854, and after working various jobs in MN, this cousin eventually settled in Mankato MN).

We believe that son Nicholas came in 1856.

Finally, Susanna immigrated to the U.S. and arrived in New York on 27 Apr 1857, with the last 3 of her children: Marie, Anna, Mathias P (Matthew), and with her nephew, Frank. Today, six of her eight children are buried at St. Nicholas, except infant Jacobus (1835-1836) who is buried in Luxembourg, and Marie Mahowald, born in 1832 (twin to Nicholas), genealogists cannot locate Marie after her 1857 arrival the U.S.

All the Mahowalds who immigrated to New Market, Minnesota are either descendants from Susanna, or her nephew Franz/Frank Mahowald"

Birth Year Notes (below) by Patrick Mahowald, August 2019:
---------------------------
The original gravestone marker has an error in Susanna's birth year. The correct year is 1802. We carefully researched this with a Luxembourg genealogist using original birth and marriage records. Due to the complex converting of the French "Republican Calendar" dates from Susanna's birth, we can see how the 1874 stone had that error.

Here's how we converted Susanna's attached birth certificate...
"Dom on "11 Nivose X". Translation: ("11" was the French day, "Nivose" is one of their French months, which means the "snowy" month. And "X" is the Roman numeral for French Republican year "10")

The web site: https://www.napoleon-empire.com/republican-calendar.php converted Susanna's birth date into the Gregorian calendar as "Jan 1, 1802". We also confirmed the 1802 birth year is consistent with Susanna and Nicholas' 1826 marriage record.
