Early Merchant of Roanoke Dies​

L. Cohn Who Established Business Here in 1897 Passes Away​


Louis Cohn, 73 died at his residence , Commerce St S.W. at 11:20p.m. last night.He was one of Roanoke's pioneer merchants, having come to this city and gone into business in 1897. He was the founder of the firm L. Cohn & Son, and retired from active business ten years ago. Mr. Cohn was past president of the Beth Israel congregation, having held that office during many years. Mr. Cohn came here from Baltimore some 40 years ago, and established his business under the firm name of L. Cohn at 7 E Salem ave. He was intimately known as the official tailor of the N&W Railway. In latter years he continued his business under the name of L. Cohn & Son. One o the founders of the Beth ISrael congregation. Mr. Cohn until the time of his death, was actively engaged in the interests of the synagogue. He is survived by four daughters and two sons. Mrs. L.M. Jigeb abd Mrs, Joseph Stern, of Roanoke, Mrs. Nathan Levy and Mr. R.M. Blumberg of Ronoke, and J.J. and Joseph Cohn of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. Rabbi M.J. Friedman officiating. Interment will be in Beth Israel Cemetery. Active pallbears will be Jacob Brenner, Julius Fisher, Abe Platt, P.H. Levy, H. Dan Moss and Harry Rosenberg. Honorary pallbearers, Ike Cooper, D.B Wallock, E Lnd, M Harrison, B Forman, Abe Totz, D.R Fisher, B Simon, William Kohen, Isaac Weinstein, Joe Spiel, Joe Davidson, B.M. Davidson, Phillip Levy, B Star, Wolfe Fine and David Kohen.
