Mr. Smith was the last person hung in Madison County. As to his guilt, there are varying opinions. Lots of speculation surrounding this person. When the cemetery was being restored, there were reports of the community being angry with his death; however, the persons in charge of the cemetery put up a fence to make sure that he was not buried inside the cemetery. Two of the community members who took pity on he and his family built him a coffin and carved a stone for a memorial. The stone was removed from the cemetery some time between the late 1960s early 1970s. It has not been located though an extensive search is being conducted.
