Zelva Compton Warner Laird, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on April 12, 2010, in Dallas. She was born in Taylor, Texas to Charles Volantus Compton and Jessie Sally Shapard Compton on July 31, 1906. Zelva attended Hockaday and graduated St. Mary's of Dallas. She also attended The Sorbonne in Paris, France. During World War II, she was involved with the Army Motor Corps. Zelva was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, Junior League of Dallas, Lakeside Browning Club, Dallas Garden Club, Dallas Woman's Club, Colonial Dames, DAR, DRT, and the Brook Hollow Golf Club. She studied art and enjoyed painting. Her interests were genealogy, her family and her friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Warner and Lee Laird and her sisters, LaVonne Compton Crawford and Clarine Compton Kakaska. She is survived by her three daughters, Sally W. Wyer of Vero Beach, FL, Ann W. Velie and husband Charles of Delray Beach, FL, and Dolly W. Ladds and husband Herbert of Buffalo, NY; nine grandchildren, William, Molly, Lisa, Decker, Mary, Willard, Julia, Helen, and Preston; 21 great-grandchildren; and many other family members. An open visitation will be held from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010, at 11:00 am, in Cox Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Private interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Salvation Army. Condolences to www.sparkman-hillcrest.com
