Born in Ireland, settled in Stillwater Minnesota, volunteered the 24th of July 1862, Company K 5th Minnesota Infantry. William served as an officer for one year and died of illness in Memphis Tennessee. The Official Record states that Lt. William Organ resigned from the 5th Minnesota and died the same day. Passing away as a civilian William was not counted as a casualty of the Civil War. Bodies of Civil War Military Officers, by regulation, are to be returned home for burial. William's grave marker states, "Died in the USA."
