Author. Daughter of the Nobel prize-winning author, Thomas Mann. After completing her primary schooling, she studied piano in Lausanne, Switzerland, and then music and art history in Florence, Italy. Fleeing World War II, she emigrated to New York in October, 1940. There, she began a professional writing career. She received American citizenship in 1952, but returned to Europe shortly thereafter, and in 1958 renewed her German citizenship. From 1954 until 1986, she lived on the island of Capri, where she wrote the bulk of her work. In 1986, she returned to mainland Europe to live out her remaining years near her family. Her most famous works include her autobiography, Vergangenes und Gegenwärtiges, published in Munich in 1956; her diary, Der Start, published in Germany in 1960; Tupfen im All, published in Cologne in 1963; Wunder der Kindheit, published in Cologne in 1966; Der letzte Häftling. Eine wahre Legende in onore eines (letzten) Komponisten, published in Germany in 1967; and a posthumously published collection of her texts, interviews, and letters, Das fahrende Haus. Aus dem Leben einer Weltbürgerin, edited by Karin Andert, published in Germany in 2007.
