Historian, writer, philosopher. 3rd child of famed author Thomas Mann. Golo Mann entered the University of Heidelberg in the spring of 1929. Here he followed the advice of his teacher Karl Jaspers to graduate in Philosophy and to study History and Latin with the prospect of becoming a Teacher. In May 1932 Golo Mann finished his dissertation in philosophy "Concerning the terms of the individual and the ego in Hegel‘s works" which was rated with an average cum laude. In 1935 Golo followed the call from the university of Rennes (France) to lecture on German language and literature. After travelling around the world with his family during World War II he began to teach history at Olivet College in Michigan. Golo Mann joined the US Army in 1943 which he left in 1946 by his own request. In the following years Golo lectured at several Colleges in California and Germany. From 1963 on he worked as a famous free-lance historian, philosopher and publicist. He lived near the Lake of Zurich. Suffering from prostate cancer he moved to Leverkusen, Germany in 1992. He died aged 85 and was buried in Kilchberg near the Lake of Zurich but , in fulfillment of his last will, outside the family grave.
