Franz Wilhelm Grommes born July 29, 1918 and baptized at St. Nicholas Church in Aurora, Kane County, IL.

Godparents were William Grommes and Frances Heimsoth. He was ordained a Priest on February 4, 1943 and changed his name to Father Leo Grommes. He resided at Marmion Military Academy on Butterfield Road in North Aurora, Kane County, IL, until his death.

"Obituaries

Father Leo Grommes, O.S.B., 65 of Aurora, died Wednesday, August 17 at Marmion Abbey. He was born July 29, 1918 in Aurora.
He graduated from St. Nicholas Parochial School, 1931 and Marmion Academy, 1935. He entered the Novitiate at St. Meinrad Archabbey, August 6, 1938, and made his profession of vows August 7, 1939. He was ordained Priest by the late Joseph Cardinal Ritter, D.D., then Archbishop of Indianapolis, later Cardinal Archbishop of St. Louis May 30, 1944. He came to Marmion in September 1945.
From 1945 to 1973 he served as Instructor and Administrator at both the Lake Street and Butterfield Road campuses of Marmion, being principal at Lake Street from 1965 to 1968. From 1973 until the time of his death he was assigned to St. Jose Priory, Soloa, Guatemala when he taught in the Colegio Seminario de San Jose.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Fred (Rita) Patterman of Indianapolis, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Clara (Heimsath) Grommes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Marmion Abbey. Rt. Rev. Abbot David J. Cyr, O.S.B. will officiate. Burial will be in Marmion Abbey. Father Grommes will lie in state at the chapel from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday. The Office of the Dead service will be at 6:30 p.m."
