Confederate Spy.
40th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Walker's) (5th Confederate Infantry), noted in Soldiers and Sailors database. Alternate name was John Puryear.

According to local(Pulaski Co.) legend, he gave secrets about the construction of the iron clad warships to the Confederacy. 3 Ironclads were built in Mound City, IL. for the Union by James B. Eads&Co.,of St. Louis, Mo.

His brief record at Fold 3 says, " taken at Paducah, Ky as a spy. " " died of chronic dysentery June 23, 1862. " roll dated, March 16, 1863.


Author's note: I still keep hearing the story from local legend that John Purveyor was shot in Paducah,KY. Also, have read that online. I intend to do more research on this soldier to find out the true facts.
