Chess Champion. Considered one of the finest players to ever represent the Americas, he was one of the most celebrated Grandmasters ever to play the World Championship. He began to play chess at 12, at his hometown, Warsaw. In 1939, he arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the Polish National Team for a tournament. Two weeks after his arrival, Germany invaded Poland. He was forced to stay in Argentina, losing his whole family in concentration camps. He became an Argentine citizen in 1944. His record was impressive. He won 52 international tournaments, winning the Argentine chess championship 8 times, and in 1948 he was considered one of the world's ten best chess players.
