Mrs. Gooden was born Sept. 29, 1937, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Louis Walter and Rowena Lucas Dennis.
She was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton, where she was very active for many years. Mrs. Gooden worked as a bookkeeper for Massanetta Springs for several years, prior to her retirement. In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Massanetta Springs, reading, traveling, gardening and spending time with her cats. She was also involved in the James Madison Life Learning Program. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.
On Aug. 8, 1955, she married William P. Gooden, who survives.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, William Gregory Gooden and wife, Karen, of Grottoes, and Michael David Gooden and wife, Amanda, of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Kelly Gooden Mason and husband, Holden, of New Market, and Rebecca Gooden Taylor and husband, David, of Elkton; a brother, Richard Dennis of Mayland; three sisters, Faye Turner of Bergton, Julia Warman of Florida and Annie Massie of Ohio; six grandchildren; and her special cat, "Honey." She was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Brown.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Elk Run Cemetery, with the Rev. Alda Gunn officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elkton Area United Services, 218 W. Spotswood Trail, Elkton, VA 22827.
