CIVIL WAR VETERAN OF DAYTON EXPIRES AT AGE OF 87 YEARS.
James Godfrey, an old and respected citizen of Dayton, died at his home Tuesday afternoon at 5 O'clock, after an illness of about ten days. Mr. Godfrey had been in failing health for several years, but his condition did not become serious until recently. He was 87 years old and was born in Benerdon, Kent, England, Jan 4, 1836 and came to this country with his parents in 1851. The family settled in New York.
Mr. Godfrey was married to Charlotte Morris at Geneva, N.Y. At the start of the Civil war, he enlisted in Co. I. 50th New York engineers, and served for three years. In August, 1865, he and his wife came to Dayton, and he had spent the greater part of his time in this vicinity since that time. He was a charter member of Elliot Post No. 160, of the G. A. R.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Kingsley, and Mrs. McCollough, and a son Charles E. Godfrey, all of Dayton. The funeral is to be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Dayton M. E. church, with Rev. Israel Hatton, of Romney, officiation. Burial is the Dayton cemetery.
