Fought in the Civil War. Private in Company K 26 of the SC Infantry (CSA).

Was buried at the Heniford Cemetery (Suggs Cemetery). This was located on the land of John "Jackie" Heniford. Joseph's sister Sarah Jane Todd was married to Jackie Heniford. In the mid 1970s this cemetery was bulldozed. Joseph and Irene's headstones were recovered from the demolished cemetery by a grandson (Clifton Todd). The stones spent several years at the Live Oak Church cemetery which was just down the road from the destroyed cemetery. They are currently propped near a storage building on the old Joseph Todd farm.
