The son of Samuel & Florida Black, in 1860 he was a student living with his family in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 3" tall with dark hair and gray eyes and later became a blacksmith.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 28, 1864, overstating his age by three years, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 1 as a private with Co. E, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was hospitalized at Point-of-Rocks, Maryland, November 24, 1864, but the date of his return to duty is not stated in his compiled military service records. He honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

He married Martha lnu. in 1870, and fathered John (b. @1868) and Ella (b. 05/10/72 - married Ross Holden). By 1900, he was living in Oxford Township, Chester County
