Bernard Hawkins was the son of the late Ernest and Bertha Hawkins. He had lived in Jamestown for 10 years and had a long career as a body and fender man working for Boeing Aircraft and Beech Aircraft during World War II, and for the Pontiac Agency in Wichita, Kan., for 21 years. He moved to California in December 1954. He worked at Ketchum's Auto Work in Compton, Los Angeles County, for 15 years and for Union No. 1305 in San Francisco until he retired in 1972.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association for more than 35 years.
He loved fishing and working on old VCRs and phonographs. He was always a kind and gentle man who treated everyone fairly.
In a family of seven brothers and a sister, he was the last survivor.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Valerie Hawkins of San Francisco; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jody Hawkins of Jamestown and Jerry and Bonnie Hawkins of Roswell, N.M.; daughters and sons-in-law, Evalena and Bob Shipman of Sun City, Riverside County, and Marilyn and Caesar Alvarez of Pinole; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Bertha Hawkins; six brothers; a sister; and a daughter, Juinita Hawkins, in November 1941.
