American clockmaker.
Silas Hoadley had little formal education. In a time when an apprenticeship meant a trade and a livelihood, school was often cut short to allow for the apprenticeship. He went to work as a carpenter apprentice with his Uncle Calvin Hoadley in Ohio. Usually this was 7 years of service. After his 7 years he went to work as a clockmaker.

Silas and Seth Thomas formed a partnership company with Eli Terry in 1809. This was good fortune as Eli Terry knew his way around manufacturing and Seth Thomas was a genius with clock design and marketing. The company was called Terry, Thomas and Hoadley. Terry parted ways with this company in 1810, followed by Thomas in December, 1813, leaving Hoadley as proprietor.

Silas manufactured clocks until 1849. He earned enough money to eventually retire and live a comfortable life, affording education to his children. Later in his life he was a successful politician and respected by his community.
