Dr. Amelia T. Wood, 81, retired director of the Ball State University Health Center, died Sunday in a Chicago nursing home. Dr. Wood came to Muncie in 1930 and served the center for 25 years until her retirement in 1955.
Dr. Wood was born in David City, Neb., where she graduated from high school. She received her A.B. degree from the University of Nebraska, a B.S. degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University, her master of medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her M.D. degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.
The former health center head interned at Philadelphia General Hospital, Women's College Hospital, and Battle Creek Sanitarium.
She had taught in rural schools before entering the field of medicine and was a health examiner and physical education instructor at Albion, Michigan College before coming to Ball State.
The health center at Ball State pioneered in many areas under Dr. Wood's guidance. During World War Ii, she was chief medical officer for some 575 Army Specialized Training Program which Ball State operated cooperatively with the Muncie Airport.
Dr. Wood was honored on Feb. 29, 1964, when Ball State dedicated the 38-bed Amelia T. Wood Health Center on Neely Avenue. Both out-patient service and a complete physical therapy program are available there.
She was a Fellow of the American Medical Association, a member of the Indiana State Medical Association, the Delaware-Blackford County Medical Society, and the American College Health Association. She belonged to Alpha Epsilon Iota medical fraternity. For many years she lived at 2004 Petty Road with her late sister, Miss Katherine Wood.
Dr. Wood is survived by three nephews, Adrian Vander Linde, Oak Lawn, Ill., Louis Vander Linde, Warren, Mich., and Gene Tuma, Walled Lake, Mich.; and a niece, Joan Phillips, Morris Plain, N.J.
Friends may call at Meeks Mortuary from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and before services there at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Dr. Donald Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.
