On July 10, 1862, three months after graduating from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, George Hansell joined the 72nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company K. George was shot in the abdomen during Pickett's Charge, on the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 3, 1863). Family history says that George walked from Gettysburg to Philadelphia to receive treatment. On March 2, 1864, he was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps. George mustered out July 31, 1865
